Sangdangsanseong Fortress

Sangdangsanseong wraps the ridge of Uamsan above Cheongju - about four kilometres of stone wall enclosing a bowl of farmland and woodland, with three main gates rebuilt and the parapet walkable most of the way round. There has been a fort here since the Three Kingdoms period, but the wall you see is an early eighteenth-century reconstruction, when the Joseon court refortified inland strongholds after the invasions. The circuit takes two to three hours at a normal pace, undulating rather than steep, with the city spread below on one side and hills on the other. Inside the walls is a small settlement of restaurants known locally for chicken and for kalguksu, which is a substantial part of why residents come. It is free, open at all hours, close to the city, and it is Cheongju's standard weekend walk rather than a national attraction.

When to go

April to June and September to November. Sunset from the west wall is the local favourite and the busiest hour. Summer is hot with little shade on the parapet.

Honest expectations

The wall is eighteenth-century rebuilding, restored again in modern times. Some stretches are closed or diverted. It is a walk with a view, not a heritage site with interpretation.
