Royal Guard Changing Ceremony

The Sumunjang Gyodaeui is the changing of the gate guard at Gwanghwamun, the main entrance of Gyeongbokgung, and it has run here since 2002 as a reconstruction rather than an unbroken tradition - the costumes, weapons, banners and drum signals were worked up from Joseon court records and paintings by a research team, which is worth knowing because it is neither ancient survival nor invented pageantry. It happens twice a day, at 10:00 and 14:00, takes about twenty minutes, and involves several dozen performers in blue, red and yellow robes with halberds and horns. It is free to watch, held outdoors in front of the gate, and afterwards you can usually photograph with the guards. A related gate-guard inspection runs at other times, and Deoksugung holds its own version of the ceremony three times daily. It is cancelled in heavy rain, snow and extreme heat, which catches people out.

When to go

10:00 or 14:00, April to June and September to November. Arrive ten minutes early for a front position. It is cancelled in heavy rain, snow or extreme heat - check before making a special trip.

Before you go

It is a modern reconstruction, not a continuous tradition. Twenty minutes, standing, in a crowd, with no seating. There is no narration in English beyond a short announcement.
