Eunpyeong Hanok Village

Eunpyeong is the odd one among Seoul's hanok districts: nothing here is old. The city laid out the site in the far north-west and sold plots on condition that owners build in hanok style, and the houses went up from around 2014 - tiled roofs and timber frames, but with insulation, underfloor heating and glazing that no Joseon house had. The result is a real residential neighbourhood of a few hundred homes, not a museum, and residents live in it. What draws visitors is the backdrop: the ridge of Bukhansan rises directly behind, so the roofline sits against granite peaks in a way no downtown hanok quarter can manage. The standard view is from a teahouse on the slope above, which is on every Korean social feed and consequently has a queue. Jingwansa, a temple with a long history, is a short walk further into the valley.

When to go

April to June and October. Weekday mornings avoid the teahouse queue. Clear days matter - the mountain backdrop is the whole point.

It is a lived-in residential area built in the last decade, not heritage; visitors expecting an old quarter are disappointed. Residents ask for quiet and no photographs into houses. It is far out - allow travel time.
