Nanta Show

Nanta opened in 1997 and became the longest-running show in Korean theatre. The premise is simple: four cooks have to prepare a wedding banquet in an hour, and everything in the kitchen becomes a percussion instrument - knives on boards, pans, bins, water. Underneath the slapstick is samulnori, the Korean percussion tradition, and the rhythmic structure is genuinely from that repertoire rather than decorative. There is no dialogue, which is why it travelled: it played Edinburgh, then Broadway in 2004, and has toured widely. Performances run in dedicated theatres in Myeongdong and Hongdae, several times daily, about ninety minutes. Audience members get pulled on stage, which some people enjoy and others dread - if you would rather not, avoid the front rows. It is aimed squarely at visitors and families and makes no pretence otherwise.

Honest expectations

It is commercial family entertainment for visitors, not a window into Korean theatre - people expecting traditional performance are misled by the samulnori framing. Ticketed, and it is loud.
