Fireflies need clean, undisturbed water and the snails their larvae feed on, and they vanished from most of industrial Korea. Muju, a mountain county in northern Jeonbuk with little heavy development, kept them - the habitat, meaning both the insects and the freshwater snails, is designated a natural monument, and the festival built around it is as much a claim about the county's environment as a celebration. It runs for about a week from late August. The daytime programme is an ordinary regional fair with markets and stages; the part worth travelling for is the evening observation, where groups are taken to the streams at dusk with strict rules on lights and noise. Numbers are capped, sessions book out, and the fireflies are wild, so a bad night is a real possibility. That honesty is part of the event - it is not a display that can be switched on.

What you actually see

  • The evening observation - guided, capped, at the streams.
  • The protected habitat - fireflies and the snails they depend on.
  • The daytime fair - markets, stages and county produce.
  • The mountain setting - Deogyusan and its valleys around the town.

When to go

Late August to early September, about a week. Book the evening sessions ahead - they are limited. Moonless, warm, still nights are best; rain and wind suppress the display.

Honest expectations

The fireflies are wild and there is no guarantee on any given night. Lights and flash photography are forbidden during observation, which rules out most photographs. Outside the evening session it is a standard regional festival.

Nearby

Deogyusan National Park and the Muju ski resort are close.
