Mokpo Marine Cable Car

Opened in 2019, Mokpo's line runs 3.23 kilometres in three stages - from the north station up over the ridge of Yudalsan, across the harbour, and down to Goha island - which makes it the longest cable car in the country. One of its towers stands about 155 metres, among the tallest of its kind anywhere. The interest is that it does two different things in one ride: a mountain crossing over Yudalsan's rock outcrops, then a sea crossing above the port and the shipping. Cabins include crystal-floored ones at a higher fare. There are stations at both ends and at the mountain summit, so you can break the journey and walk on Yudalsan, which is worth doing. Mokpo's Modern History Street and the old port district are below. Sunset and the harbour lights are the recommended timing; the line closes in high wind.

When to go

April to June and September to November, toward sunset. Weekends queue. Closed in high wind - this is an exposed coast.

Honest expectations

Ticketed, and crystal cabins cost more with a longer wait. Round trip plus a mountain stop is a couple of hours. Mokpo is a long way from anywhere except the Jeonnam coast.
