Jeondong Catholic Cathedral

The cathedral was begun in 1908 and finished in 1914, designed by a French missionary priest and built in grey and red brick with a central bell tower and two smaller flanking towers under domed caps. The ground was chosen for its connection with the earliest years of Catholicism in Korea. Architecturally the building is an outsider: a European plan with Romanesque arcading dropped into a quarter of tiled hanok roofs, and that contrast is exactly why it photographs as well as it does. Inside it is plain, with round arches on brick piers and clear light through the windows. It is an active parish church, not a monument.

When to go

Weekday mornings are the calm window; the street outside fills with visitors in rented hanbok from late morning and stays busy until evening. The interior is closed to sightseers during services and weddings, which are frequent on Saturdays. Autumn light on the brick is the best of the year. Half an hour inside is plenty.

Honest expectations

It is small, and the interior is plainer than the outside leads you to expect. Access is restricted whenever a service is on, which catches out a lot of visitors who have made the trip for it. The pavement in front is a standing photo queue and a clear shot takes patience. The surrounding streets are dense with souvenir shops and street food.
