Jangho Beach

Jangho is a small fishing village on a curved bay south of Samcheok, protected by headlands on both sides so the water stays calm and unusually clear for the East Sea - clear enough that the local trade is transparent-bottomed kayaks, hired by the hour, through which you look down at rock, weed and fish while paddling. Snorkelling works from the shore in summer. The Naples comparison is the village's own and is generous, but the setting is genuinely good: a working harbour with boats and drying squid, a short beach of coarse sand and pebble, cliffs either side, and a coastal walkway with a suspension bridge round the headland. There is a small underwater observatory. The water is cold - this is the East Sea and even August is bracing - and the season is short, with most facilities operating from roughly June to September and the village quiet the rest of the year.

When to go

July and August for kayaking and snorkelling; the water is cold and most hires close outside summer. May and October are pleasant for walking the coast path.

Honest expectations

The water is genuinely cold even in August. Kayak hire queues at summer weekends and stops in wind. The beach is small and pebbly, and the village has limited facilities off season.
