Hyeopjae Beach

Hyeopjae runs along the western shore near Hallim, joined to the neighbouring Geumneung beach so the sand effectively continues for a couple of kilometres, and the sand is white because it is largely crushed shell rather than mineral grit. The water is shallow and clear, and directly offshore sits Biyangdo, a small flat-topped volcanic island a couple of kilometres out that fills the view and gives the beach its composition - boats run across from Hallim harbour and the walk round the island takes an hour or two. Behind the beach is a pine grove used for camping and shade, which matters in a Jeju summer, and beyond that the Hallim Park gardens with their lava caves. Sunsets here are the western-coast draw. It is one of the busiest beaches on the island in July and August and pleasantly empty in the shoulder months.

What to expect

Water is very shallow at low tide and the sea retreats a fair way. July and August are crowded with limited parking. Wind on this coast can be strong.
