Paarl Rock

Paarl Mountain carries three granite domes - Paarl Rock, Britannia Rock and Gordon Rock - and the name comes from a Dutch party in 1657 who saw them wet after rain, glinting in sun, and called the largest Peerlberg, pearl mountain. The granite is old, part of the Cape Granite Suite intruded some 500 to 550 million years ago, and it weathers into rounded whalebacks scattered with balanced boulders. A road climbs into the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, and from the parking a short scramble on bare rock with chain handholds reaches the top of Paarl Rock, with the Berg River valley, the winelands and Table Mountain in the distance. The reserve has a cultivated protea garden, dams, walking and mountain-bike trails. The Afrikaans Language Monument is on the same mountain, so the two are usually done together.

March to May and September to November. Two hours. Summer afternoons are hot on bare rock.

Things to know

The final scramble is on smooth granite and is genuinely slippery when wet - the chains matter. Gate hours are enforced and cars get locked in. There is no shade on the domes. Break-ins at the parking have been reported.
