Muizenberg Beach

Muizenberg sits at the top of False Bay, where the swell arrives already softened and breaks slowly over a long sandy bottom - which is why this is where Cape Town learns to surf, and why the water is several degrees warmer than the Atlantic beaches on the other side of the peninsula. The row of small wooden bathing huts painted in flat primary colours is the most photographed thing on the beach and dates in its current form to a restoration; the originals go back to the Victorian resort era, when Muizenberg was the fashionable seaside for the whole colony. Surf schools and board hire line the corner. False Bay has white sharks and the volunteer Shark Spotters programme watches the water from the mountainside above, flying coloured flags and sounding a siren; sightings have dropped sharply since about 2015 for reasons still being studied.

When to go

All year; December to March for the warmest water. Half a day. Mornings are cleanest before the wind.

Honest expectations

It is crowded with beginners and boards - not a place for a quiet swim. The water is still cold by most standards. The village behind the beach is patchy and needs ordinary care with belongings. Wind picks up strongly by afternoon in summer.
