Savo Island

Savo's green cone rises across Iron Bottom Sound from Honiara - an active volcano at rest, its crater valley steaming with hot springs and mud pools that village guides walk visitors through, eggs boiled in the vents as proof of concept. The island's stranger residents are megapodes: mound-builder birds that lay their eggs in the geothermally warmed black sand, harvested under custom management at the traditional grounds. History

The first recorded European sighting came in April 1568, from a small boat of the Spanish expedition of Álvaro de Mendaña commanded by Pedro de Ortega Valencia, which charted the volcanic island as Sesarga.
