Getting thereGuided trail from Lelei village above Honiara
EntryVillage and guide fees

An hour's sweaty ridge walk above Honiara, the Mataniko River performs the Solomons' best geological trick: it pours over a broad falls directly into the mouth of a cavern, the water disappearing into darkness swirling with swiftlets before re-emerging downstream through a gorge of polished stone. The trail from Lelei village - guided, as custom and common sense both require - runs ridgelines with harbour views before dropping steeply to the river, and the finish is the swim: pools below the falls, the cave mouth thundering above, and the return climb postponed as long as possible.

What you actually see

  • The cave-mouth falls - the river vanishing into the cavern.
  • The swiftlet cave - birds swirling the spray-lit dark.
  • The gorge pools - the swim below the drop.
  • The ridge approach - harbour and mountain views en route.

When to go

May to November keeps the trail passable and the river swimmable; after heavy rain the falls impress and the descent terrifies in equal measure - judge accordingly. Mornings beat the heat on the exposed ridge.

Honest expectations

Go guided from the village - it is custom land, the route is unsigned, and fees are the arrangement; agree them clearly at the start. The final descent is steep, muddy and hands-on. Leave nothing valuable in vehicles in town, per standing Honiara practice.

Nearby

Honiara's markets and war memorials, and Tenaru falls east along the coast.
