Getting thereInland from the coast road east of Honiara; guided river walk, several hours each way
EntryLandowner and guide fees

Tenaru drops some sixty metres into a pool in the Guadalcanal interior, reached on a walk of several hours up the river valley from the coast road, crossing and recrossing the water and climbing through gardens and forest. The pool at the base is deep and cold. The route runs through customary land the whole way, so a guide from the villages and a landowner fee are part of the trip.

What you actually see

  • The fall - around sixty metres dropping into a forest pool.
  • The plunge pool - deep and cold enough to swim under the spray.
  • The river route - hours of crossings and climbing through the valley.
  • The village land - customary ground the whole walk passes through.

When to go

May to October is the drier season and the practical window. Rain raises the river and makes crossings dangerous. The walk is muddy in any month.

Honest expectations

This is a full day of hard walking with many river crossings and it is not a stroll. Rain upstream can strand walkers on the wrong side. Guides and landowner fees are required and arranged in the villages.

Nearby

Honiara is west, and Mataniko Falls are closer to town.
