The Súľov rocks are conglomerate, a coarse cemented gravel that weathers into towers, mushrooms, windows and arches rather than the clean walls limestone gives, and the result is a rock town spread across a valley in the Súľov mountains. A marked circuit climbs through the formations with ladders and chains on the steeper sections, passing a natural rock gate and the ruin of Súľov castle perched on a pinnacle above the valley.

What you actually see

  • The conglomerate towers - weathered pillars and mushrooms of cemented gravel.
  • The rock gate - a natural arch on the circuit path.
  • Sulov castle - a ruin on a rock pinnacle above the valley.
  • The circuit - a marked loop with ladders through the formations.

When to go

April to October is the walking season. Autumn colour among the rocks is the best of the year. The ladders are slippery when wet and dangerous in ice.

Honest expectations

The circuit involves ladders and chains and is not a stroll. It gets crowded at weekends and the ladders queue. Parking in the village is limited.

Nearby

Manin gorge is southwest, and Zilina is northeast.
