Lomnický štít

Lomnický štít is the second highest peak in the High Tatras at 2,634 metres, and a cable car, carrying visitors since 1940 and rebuilt since, runs to the summit, which makes it the only Tatra peak of that height most people will ever stand on. An astronomical and meteorological observatory occupies the top, along with a viewing platform and a small cafe. Time on the summit is limited by ticket because the platform is small. The first recorded ascent was made by the English traveller Robert Townson on 16 August 1793.

When to go

June to September is the most reliable for clear weather and open cable cars. The lift closes for maintenance in spring and autumn and in high wind. Tickets are timed and sell out days ahead in summer.

Good to know

Tickets must be booked ahead and time on the summit is limited to under an hour. The lift closes in wind, which happens often, and refunds are awkward. Cloud hides the view on many days.
