Getting thereBy cable car from Tatranska Lomnica, about 15 km north of Poprad
EntryCable car charged; timed tickets

Lomnický štít is the second highest peak in the High Tatras at 2,634 metres, and a cable car built in the 1930s and rebuilt since runs to the summit, which makes it the only Tatra peak of that height most people will ever stand on. An astronomical and meteorological observatory occupies the top, along with a viewing platform and a small cafe. Time on the summit is limited by ticket because the platform is small.

What you actually see

  • The summit platform - a viewing deck at 2,634 metres above the whole range.
  • The cable car - a two-stage lift from Tatranska Lomnica to the top.
  • The observatory - the meteorological and astronomical station on the peak.
  • The Tatra panorama - the whole range and the Poprad basin below.

When to go

June to September is the most reliable for clear weather and open cable cars. The lift closes for maintenance in spring and autumn and in high wind. Tickets are timed and sell out days ahead in summer.

Honest expectations

Tickets must be booked ahead and time on the summit is limited to under an hour. The lift closes in wind, which happens often, and refunds are awkward. Cloud hides the view on many days.

Nearby

Tatranska Lomnica is below, and Strbske Pleso is west.
