Gombasecká Cave

Gombasecká was found in 1951 and opened to visitors in 1955, and what it is known for is a particular formation: soda-straw stalactites, hollow tubes the width of a drinking straw, here growing to about three metres, which is exceptional. The cave is one of the Slovak Karst show caves administered as part of the Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst World Heritage property. It was also the first cave in Slovakia used for speleotherapy, from 1968.

When to go

Year round; the cave holds a constant temperature around nine degrees. Tours run to set times. Summer weekends are busiest.

Things to know

The cave is small and the tour is short. The soda straws are fragile and the lighting is kept low for them. Tours are in Slovak with printed translations.
