Ledenika Cave

Ledenika lies at about eight hundred and thirty metres in the Vrachanski Balkan above Vratsa and takes its name from the ice: cold air settles in the entrance chamber through the winter and stalagmites of ice form there, lasting into spring, which is unusual for a Bulgarian cave. Beyond the entrance the route runs about three hundred metres through ten chambers with limestone formations, including the Concert Hall, a large space with good acoustics used for occasional performances, and pools. It was opened to visitors in 1961 and is one of the most visited caves in the country. The temperature underground stays around eight degrees, and the drive up from the gorge gives views over the Vratsa plain.

When to go

April to October for the road and the formations; the ice is present in winter and early spring, when access is harder. Two hours including the drive. Tours are timed and run in groups.
