Bratislava Castle

Bratislava Castle stands boldly white on a hill above the Danube, a great rectangular fortress with four corner towers that is the emblem of the Slovak capital, likened to an upturned table. Rebuilt after a fire, it houses the Slovak National Museum and its terraces give a sweeping view over the old town, the river and into neighbouring Austria and Hungary.

Background

The hill under the castle is an isolated rocky height of the Little Carpathians, rising straight above the Danube. A water well in the courtyard is 80 metres deep, and the tower, 47 metres high, goes back to the 13th century. From the mid-1500s, for around 200 years, that tower kept the crown jewels of Hungary. On 28 May 1811 a fire started by accident by garrison soldiers gutted the building, which was rebuilt from 1956 to 1964. The 15th century Sigismund Gate is the best-preserved original part, and the Vienna Gate dates from 1712. Outlines of a 9th century Great Moravian basilica are marked on the ground east of the castle.

When to go

Year-round; the grounds and views are free and open, the museum ticketed. A clear day gives the best three-country view. It is floodlit at night.

Practical notes

The castle is a modern reconstruction rather than an ancient survival, plain inside apart from the museum. The climb up is short but steep. Its value is the landmark and the view as much as the interior.
