Bratislava Castle

Bratislava Castle stands boldly white on a hill above the Danube, a great rectangular fortress with four corner towers that is the emblem of the Slovak capital, likened to an upturned table. Rebuilt after a fire, it houses the Slovak National Museum and its terraces give a sweeping view over the old town, the river and into neighbouring Austria and Hungary.

When to go

Year-round; the grounds and views are free and open, the museum ticketed. A clear day gives the best three-country view. It is floodlit at night.

Honest expectations

The castle is a modern reconstruction rather than an ancient survival, plain inside apart from the museum. The climb up is short but steep. Its value is the landmark and the view as much as the interior.
