National Gallery Singapore

The National Gallery occupies the two most loaded buildings in Singapore's civic district: the former Supreme Court, with its dome and colonnade, and the old City Hall on whose steps the Japanese surrender was accepted in 1945 and where Singapore's independence was later proclaimed. A steel and glass canopy now links them into one museum, and the conversion left the bones visible, so you walk from a gallery into a preserved courtroom or a holding cell. The collection is the point: the largest public holding of modern art from Singapore and Southeast Asia anywhere, tracing how artists across the region responded to colonialism, independence and modernity. The rooftop terrace looks straight across the Padang to the Marina Bay skyline.

When to go

Any time; this is an indoor, air-conditioned destination, which makes it the obvious choice during the afternoon downpours. Evenings are quieter and the rooftop is best around sunset.

Honest expectations

The building is enormous and the layout is genuinely confusing, with two structures, several levels and multiple bridges; pick two or three galleries rather than attempting everything. Entry is charged for visitors while residents go free, which surprises some. Southeast Asian modern art is unfamiliar territory for many, and the free guided tours make a real difference.
