The Underwater Sculpture Park

In the sheltered waters of Molinere Bay off Grenada's west coast lies one of the most original and enchanting attractions in the Caribbean, the world's first underwater sculpture park. Created by the sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, it features dozens of haunting, life-sized concrete figures placed on the seabed at snorkelling and diving depths, from a ring of children holding hands to a lone figure at a desk. Over the years, the sculptures have been colonised by coral, sponges and marine life, transforming into living artificial reefs, a moving fusion of art, nature and conservation viewed by drifting snorkellers and divers.

When to go

December to April, the dry season, for the calmest seas and best underwater visibility; the park is reached by boat from St. George's or nearby, and can be enjoyed by snorkelling from the surface or diving among the sculptures. Calm, clear days show the art and its coral growth at their most beautiful.

Honest expectations

The sculptures lie underwater, so experiencing them requires a boat trip and swimming, snorkelling or diving, and over the years some figures have eroded or been damaged by storms while new works are added; visibility depends on conditions. As a genuinely unique and beautiful fusion of art, nature and reef conservation, the world's first such park, though, drifting among these haunting, coral-cloaked figures is an unforgettable and magical experience.
