Getting thereOn the peninsula south of Freetown; road, around an hour
EntryFree; resort facilities charged

Tokeh runs along the Freetown peninsula south of the capital, a long stretch of white sand with the forested hills of the peninsula rising directly behind it and palms along the back, and it is the beach the peninsula is best known for. A resort occupies part of it and a fishing village sits at one end. The water is warm and the surf moderate. It was used for a well-known cigarette advertisement in the 1970s.

What you actually see

  • The white sand - a long stretch backed by palms and forest.
  • The peninsula hills - the wooded slopes rising directly behind the beach.
  • The fishing village - the working settlement at one end.
  • The surf - moderate Atlantic conditions along the shore.

When to go

November to April is the dry season. The rains from May to October are very heavy on this coast. Harmattan haze in December and January can dull the light.

Honest expectations

Part of the beach fronts a resort and the public sections are less maintained. The road down the peninsula is slow. Currents can be strong and there is no lifeguard.

Nearby

River No. 2 is south, and Lakka is north.
