Bureh Beach

Bureh on the southern part of the Freetown peninsula is where Sierra Leone's surfing happens, a beach with a consistent enough break that a village surf club set up there and now runs boards, lessons and simple accommodation as a community operation. The wave is gentle enough for beginners. The beach is long, the village is at one end and the hills rise behind it. The club was set up by young men from the village in 2012 and is run entirely by them.

When to go

November to April is the dry season; the swell runs through much of the year. The rains from May to October are heavy. Weekends bring visitors from Freetown.

Honest expectations

Accommodation is very basic bandas with no power in places. The wave is small by international standards. The road down the peninsula is slow.
