Freetown

Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, is a bustling, vibrant and hilly seaside city with a unique and moving history: it was founded in the late eighteenth century as a settlement for freed and rescued slaves, giving rise to the distinctive Krio culture and language that still flavour the city. Spread beneath the forested Lion Mountains along a great natural harbour, it is a lively, colourful metropolis of markets, music, historic churches and Krio board houses, long centred on the great Cotton Tree, a historic landmark. Chaotic, warm and full of energy, and gateway to the peninsula's beaches, it offers a genuine taste of West African city life.

When to go

November to April, the dry season, for the most comfortable weather to explore the hilly city, as the rainy season brings heavy downpours; the city is hot and humid year-round. It is the gateway to the peninsula beaches and the wider country, and best explored with awareness of its history and a local guide for context.

Honest expectations

Freetown is a busy, chaotic and, in places, run-down West African capital, with heavy traffic and the usual city precautions, and visitor infrastructure that is still developing, so its appeal is its warmth, energy, history and Krio culture rather than polished sights; note that the historic Cotton Tree, a beloved landmark, fell in a storm in 2023. As a vibrant, welcoming capital of unique and moving history and the gateway to the beaches, though, Freetown is a genuine and characterful introduction.
