Kent sits at the southern tip of the Freetown peninsula, a fishing village founded in the nineteenth century as one of the settlements for liberated Africans, with a stone church, a few old buildings and boats drawn up on the beach. Boats to the Banana Islands leave from here, a short crossing to the group visible offshore. The village is quiet and the road ends at it.

What you actually see

  • The fishing beach - boats drawn up on the sand in front of the village.
  • The stone church - the surviving building from the settlement period.
  • The boat crossing - the departure point for the Banana Islands.
  • The peninsula end - the last village before the land runs out.

When to go

November to April is the dry season and calmest for the crossing. The rains from May to October are heavy. Boats depend on the weather.

Honest expectations

There is little in the village and facilities are minimal. The road down takes around two hours from Freetown. Boat crossings are negotiated on the beach rather than scheduled.

Nearby

The Banana Islands are offshore, and Bureh is north.
