Morne Seychellois National Park

More than a fifth of Mahe is national park, and Morne Seychellois covers the island's mountainous interior - a world of mist forest, granite outcrops and endemic plants that most beach visitors never see. Trails climb from the coast road through cinnamon and takamaka into cloud forest where the carnivorous Seychelles pitcher plant grows, and on toward Morne Seychellois itself, at over 900 metres the highest point in the country. Lower down, the Mission Lodge viewpoint occupies the ruins of a nineteenth-century school for liberated slave children, with one of the finest outlooks over the west coast.

When to go

The drier, breezier southeast season from May to September makes for the best hiking, with firmer trails. The northwest months bring heavy afternoon showers that turn granite slabs slippery. Start early in any season - cloud builds over the peaks by midday and swallows the views.

Honest expectations

Trails are steep, humid and often slick on bare granite - proper shoes matter more than fitness. Marking varies from decent to nonexistent, and the longer routes genuinely benefit from a local guide. Leeches appear after rain in the wetter forest sections. Views are weather-dependent: a summit in cloud gives you a grey wall, so build flexibility into the plan.
