Lisine Waterfall

Veliki Buk, usually called the Lisine waterfall, drops around twenty metres over a tufa lip into a pool in a beech valley on the northern flank of Beljanica mountain, and it is among the higher and more reliable falls in Serbia. A short walk from the parking area reaches the base, with a viewing platform and steps up beside the flow. A little further up the valley are the Vrelo springs, where the river emerges from the limestone in a strong karst resurgence, and the water is cold enough to make swimming brief. Restaurants at the head of the valley grill trout from the stream. The falls and Resava cave are almost always combined on the same day, and in summer the valley fills with picnicking families.

When to go

April to June for the strongest flow after snowmelt and rain, September and October for colour and quiet. Late summer can reduce the fall considerably. Winter freezes it into an ice column in cold years.

Good to know

Flow drops a lot in dry summers and the fall can be underwhelming in August. The valley is crowded at summer weekends and litter is a problem. Steps beside the fall are wet and slippery. Facilities are seasonal.
