EntryTicketed by bout; prices vary widely

Senegalese wrestling, lutte avec frappe, is the country's dominant spectator sport, bigger than football in audience and money, and the Arène Nationale at Pikine was built for it and opened in 2018. Bouts combine wrestling with bare-fist striking, and each one is preceded by long ritual preparation: drumming, dancing, charms and libations that can take longer than the fight itself, which is often over in under a minute. The big cards fill the arena and dominate national attention for days.

What you actually see

  • The bouts - wrestling with striking, frequently decided in under a minute.
  • The rituals - the drumming, dancing and charm work before each fight.
  • The crowd - a capacity audience for the sport that outdraws football here.
  • The arena - a purpose-built venue opened in 2018 for a sport that outgrew stadiums.

When to go

The season runs roughly November to July, with the biggest cards clustered in the dry months. Bouts are announced weeks ahead and dates move. Events start late and run into the night.

Honest expectations

Tickets are bought through local contacts rather than online and prices swing enormously with the card. The arena is on the eastern side of the conurbation and getting back late needs arranging. It is loud, crowded and long, with far more waiting than fighting.

Nearby

Pikine and Guediawaye surround the arena, and central Dakar is west.
