UNESCO World Heritage
The roça above São João dos Angolares was taken on by the chef João Carlos Silva, who restored part of the main house and turned it into a hotel and restaurant working entirely from what the island grows, serving long fixed menus of fish and local produce on the terrace above the forest. It is the best known of the working conversions. UNESCO inscribed it in 2026 as one of six roças forming a single property.
What you actually see
- The restored main house - the estate building converted to hotel and restaurant.
- The island menu - the fixed meals built from what São Tomé produces.
- The terrace - the view over forest and coast from the dining level.
- The 2026 inscription - one of six roças in the UNESCO property.
When to go
June to September is the drier gravana season. Meals must be booked well in advance. The estate is busiest at weekends.
Honest expectations
Meals are long fixed menus and must be booked ahead; walking in is not usually possible. Rooms are limited. Only part of the estate is restored; the rest is decaying.
