Fort Charlotte

Fort Charlotte crowns the ridge west of Kingstown at some 600 feet, completed in the early 1800s and named for the queen of the day - and its most-repeated curiosity is that many of its cannon point inland, a legacy of a garrison that watched the island's interior as warily as the sea. Today the battlements earn their climb with the country's best free view: Kingstown's harbour bowl below, the leeward coast climbing north, and on clear days the Grenadines - Bequia, Mustique and beyond - laid out south like stepping stones. A small museum room holds murals of national history, and the breeze on the ramparts retires the town's heat.

Honest expectations

The fort is partially maintained rather than polished - expect weathered walls, informal interpretation and the odd closed room. The walk up from town is steep and hot; taxis solve it cheaply. Views, not structures, are the payoff.
