Getting thereAt Millet in the interior; road from Castries then a guided trail

The Millet sanctuary sits in the forest around the Roseau dam in Saint Lucia's interior, and it is the most reliable place to look for the island's endemic birds: the Saint Lucia parrot, oriole, warbler, pewee and black finch all occur along the trail, which loops through the forest on the hillside above the reservoir. A guide from the community goes with visitors and knows where the birds are.

What you actually see

  • The Saint Lucia parrot - the national bird, recovered from near extinction.
  • The other endemics - oriole, warbler, pewee and black finch on the trail.
  • The forest loop - the path running through the hillside woodland.
  • The reservoir - the Roseau dam water below the trail.

When to go

December to April is the dry season and the trail is firmer. Early morning is when the birds are active. Parrots are noisiest in the morning and late afternoon.

Honest expectations

Sightings need patience and a guide, and the parrot is heard far more often than seen. The trail is steep and muddy in places. Access needs arranging with the forestry department.

Nearby

Millet village is nearby, and Castries is northwest.
