Up the hill from Old Road Town - where English settlement of the Caribbean began in 1624 - two neighbouring estates make the island's best cultural half day. Romney Manor's gardens spread beneath a saman tree centuries old and as wide as a village green, and its old estate house has hosted Caribelle Batik since the 1970s, printers hand-waxing and dyeing cloth in the Indonesian manner with Caribbean palettes. Next door, Wingfield Estate's excavated ruins step down the ghut: aqueduct, water wheel, boiling house and a rum distillery dating to the seventeenth century, among the oldest intact in the region. Carib petroglyphs mark the roadside stones below.

What you actually see

  • The saman tree - the vast canopy shading Romney's lawns.
  • Caribelle Batik - wax-and-dye printing demonstrated and sold.
  • Wingfield's works - aqueduct, wheel and the early rum distillery.
  • The Old Road petroglyphs - Carib carvings on the boulders below.

When to go

Year round; December to April is driest and the gardens fullest. Cruise-day middays crowd the batik studio - mornings are calm. The zipline over the ghut adds adrenaline for those inclined.

Honest expectations

The batik operation is a shop as much as a studio - a good one, but expect retail. Wingfield's ruins are actively interpreted yet modest in scale; sugar-history enthusiasts get the most from them. Combined with the petroglyphs and Old Road, the cluster rewards half a day, not a whole one.

Nearby

Brimstone Hill Fortress, Old Road Town and the scenic railway's cane country.
