Brimstone Hill Fortress

Brimstone Hill Fortress, crowning a steep, 230-metre volcanic hill on the west coast of Saint Kitts, is one of the best-preserved and most impressive historic fortifications in the Caribbean, a UNESCO World Heritage Site earning it the name the Gibraltar of the West Indies. Built by the British over the eighteenth century, largely by enslaved Africans, this vast citadel of massive black-stone ramparts, bastions, barracks and cannon commands the surrounding sea and coastline. When to go

December to April, the dry season, for the clearest weather and best views, though the fortress is a highlight year-round; the hilltop is breezy and cooler than the coast, and the panoramas are finest on a clear day, stretching to neighbouring islands. Morning visits avoid the strongest midday heat on the exposed ramparts.

Honest expectations

The fortress is a restored historic site rather than a raw ruin, reached by a steep road, and, like all such colonial-era fortifications, its history includes the enslaved labour that built it, worth acknowledging.
