Fairview is a French colonial great house of around 1701 on the slope west of Basseterre, restored with period furniture in the rooms and the volcanic stone kitchen, cistern and outbuildings kept as they were. Gardens of tropical planting run down the slope below it with the sea beyond. The house survived where most St Kitts great houses did not, which is what makes it worth the stop.

When to go
December to April is the dry season. Cruise days bring tour groups through in the middle of the day. Mornings are quieter and cooler.
Honest expectations
The estate's history as a sugar plantation worked by enslaved people is presented lightly. Tour groups fill the house at peak times. Two hours covers everything.
