Getting thereFrom Molineux or Wingfield on St Kitts; steep forest trail, guide advised
EntryGuide fee

Dos d'Ane, also called Wingfield Pond, sits in an old crater on the Verchilds ridge in the middle of St Kitts, a small body of water in dense rainforest reached on a steep climb of a couple of hours from either side of the island. The pond is shallow and often more mud than water. The climb through the forest, with vervet monkeys and tree ferns along it, is the real reason to go.

What you actually see

  • The crater pond - a small shallow body of water in an old vent.
  • The rainforest climb - a couple of hours up through dense forest.
  • The vervet monkeys - the introduced population living in the forest.
  • The Verchilds ridge - the older volcanic ground in the island's centre.

When to go

December to April is drier and the trail is more manageable. The forest is wet year round. Rain makes the descent genuinely slippery.

Honest expectations

The pond itself is unimpressive and frequently reduced to mud. The climb is steep and the path is not well marked, so a guide matters. There are no facilities anywhere on the route.

Nearby

Romney Manor is west, and Mount Liamuiga is northwest.
