Red Rocks began as a campsite and grew into a community initiative running craft cooperatives, an artists' residency, a library and workshops in basket weaving, banana beer brewing and cooking, with income going back into local projects. It also runs a cultural festival. It sits on the road between Musanze and the park gate, and it works as a base for people who want more than a gorilla permit and a transfer.

What you actually see

  • The craft workshops - basket weaving and other cooperatives working on site.
  • The banana beer brewing - the process demonstrated and tasted.
  • The artists' residency - studios and exhibition space for Rwandan and visiting artists.
  • The community projects - the initiatives the centre's income funds.

When to go

Year round; activities are arranged rather than scheduled and should be booked. The annual cultural festival is usually in the middle of the year. Rains make the grounds muddy.

Honest expectations

Activities depend on what is running on a given day and cannot be assumed. Accommodation is simple. It is a community project rather than a polished attraction.

Nearby

Musanze is east, and Kinigi and the park gate are northwest.
