Mount Muhabura

Muhabura reaches 4,127 metres on the Rwanda-Uganda border, a steep cone, the third highest of the eight main Virunga volcanoes, that stands apart from the others and is visible from a long way off, which is what its name means: the guide. The climb is unrelenting, gaining well over a thousand metres with almost no flat ground, through forest into heath and then bare rock, and a small crater lake sits at the summit. It is done in one long day and is harder than Bisoke.

When to go

June to September and December to February are the drier windows. Wet-season climbs are much harder and often abandoned. Cloud builds through the morning, so an early start matters for the view.

Good to know

This is a hard climb and the gradient is unrelenting; fitness matters more than on Bisoke. Cloud covers the summit most days by mid-morning. A permit and compulsory guide add significant cost.

Bisoke and Karisimbi are west along the chain, and Musanze is south.
