Inema Arts Center

Inema was set up in 2012 by the brothers Emmanuel Nkuranga and Innocent Nkurunziza in a house in Kacyiru, and it works as a gallery, a set of studios where a dozen or so artists paint on site, and a programme running art classes for children and dance and yoga sessions. Visitors can walk through the studios and talk to the artists, which is unusual and is the main reason to go. There is a bar and garden in the grounds.

When to go

Year round; the centre keeps daily hours. Thursday evenings bring a regular gathering with music. Weekday mornings are quietest for seeing artists at work.

Honest expectations

How many artists are working on a given day varies. Prices for original work are high by local standards. It is a commercial gallery as much as a cultural centre.
