UNESCO World Heritage
Sergius of Radonezh founded a hermitage here in the 1330s and it became the spiritual centre of Russian Orthodoxy, the country's most important monastery, and a fortress - its walls withstood a sixteen-month siege in the early seventeenth century. UNESCO listed it in 1993. Inside the walls the Trinity cathedral of 1422 holds Sergius's relics and an iconostasis painted by Andrei Rublev and Daniil Chorny; Rublev's Trinity, among the most significant works in Russian art, was made for it, spent decades in the Tretyakov Gallery where it could be conserved, and was transferred to the church in 2023, a decision that conservators publicly opposed on condition grounds. The Assumption cathedral of the 1580s with blue star-spangled domes, the Refectory church in vivid painted patterning, and the eighty-eight-metre baroque bell tower complete the ensemble. It is a working monastery and a seminary.
What you actually see
- The Trinity cathedral - the 1422 church holding Sergius's relics and Rublev's iconostasis.
- The Assumption cathedral - 1580s, with blue star-spangled domes.
- The bell tower - eighteenth-century baroque, eighty-eight metres.

When to go
May to September. Three to four hours. Ninety minutes by suburban train from Moscow. Major feast days fill it entirely.
Honest expectations
A working monastery and seminary - dress rules are enforced and much is off limits. Queues to venerate relics can be very long. Photography inside churches is prohibited. Rublev's Trinity is in the church rather than a museum, and viewing conditions reflect that.
Nearby
Sergiev Posad town and its toy museum are around the walls; Moscow is south.
