Konstantin Tsiolkovsky lost most of his hearing to scarlet fever as a child, educated himself largely in libraries, taught mathematics in Kaluga schools for decades, and in his spare time worked out the physics of rocket flight - the equation relating a rocket's velocity change to its exhaust velocity and mass ratio, published in 1903, along with proposals for multistage rockets, liquid propellants, airlocks and orbital stations. He was working almost alone in a provincial town and was largely ignored until late in life. The museum opened in 1967, with Yuri Gagarin laying the foundation stone, and was the first devoted to space flight anywhere: rockets in the hall, engines, capsules, a Vostok, a full-size Mir module and a planetarium, with a large new wing added in 2021. Tsiolkovsky's own wooden house in the town, where he wrote and kept a workshop in the attic, is a separate museum.
