Mon Repos Park

Mon Repos occupies a peninsula on Vyborg Bay where the ground is bare Karelian granite, glacially smoothed and split, with pine growing straight out of the rock and water in every inlet. It was developed from the 1760s and shaped principally by Ludwig Heinrich von Nicolay, a Baltic German who was tutor and then librarian to the Russian imperial family, and by his son: an English landscape park that used the granite rather than levelling it, with paths, viewpoints, a Chinese bridge, an obelisk on a rock, a neoclassical wooden manor house and, on an island reached by boat, the family burial chapel. It fell into decay through the twentieth century and a long restoration was completed in 2021, which reopened the manor and repaired the follies. The combination of formal eighteenth-century landscape design with hard northern rock and pine is unusual and is what makes the park worth the trip.

When to go

May to September; autumn colour is good. Two to four hours. Vyborg itself is worth the rest of the day.

Honest expectations

Ticketed, with the manor a separate charge. Paths over granite are uneven and slippery when wet. The island chapel is reached by boat only in season. Mosquitoes near the water in summer.

Vyborg's castle and old town are a short walk; St Petersburg is south-east.
