Kenozero National Park

Kenozero protects about a hundred and forty thousand hectares of lake, forest and village in the Russian north, and what makes it exceptional is not the landscape alone but what stands in it. Around a hundred wooden chapels, churches, bell towers and sacred groves survive across the villages and shores - built without nails in the northern carpentry tradition, most from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, many of them tiny. Several retain nebesa: painted ceiling vaults, radiating panels of angels and saints on a blue ground, made by village painters, of which Kenozero holds by far the largest surviving concentration in Russia. The park was listed by UNESCO in 2024 as a cultural landscape. Sacred groves of old trees, protected by custom rather than law, stand beside many chapels. Visitors stay in village houses, move by boat, and the whole thing is remote enough that getting there is a commitment.

When to go

June to September, when boats run and roads are passable. Three days to a week. Winter access is by ice road and is for the committed.

Honest expectations

Genuinely remote - long rough roads and then boats, with travel taking most of a day. Accommodation is in village houses with basic facilities. Chapels are locked and opened by keyholders, which needs arranging. Mosquitoes are severe.
