The wild tulips of the Caspian steppe - Schrenk's tulip principally, along with Biebersteins - flower for two or three weeks in April, and across parts of Kalmykia they come up in enough density to colour whole stretches of open ground red and yellow. Schrenk's tulip is a protected species and an ancestor of the garden tulip, which reached the Netherlands from Ottoman gardens that had drawn on this same wild stock. The republic runs a tulip festival each April around the bloom, with Kalmyk music, wrestling, archery and horse events, which is also when the roads out to the steppe carry traffic they otherwise never see. Kalmykia is the only Buddhist republic in Europe, and Elista has the Golden Abode temple. Lake Manych-Gudilo, a large saline lake on the southern edge, holds pelicans and other birds and has islands with feral horses.

What you actually see

  • The bloom - Schrenk's tulips colouring open steppe for two or three weeks.
  • The ancestry - the wild stock behind the garden tulip, via Ottoman gardens.
  • The festival - Kalmyk music, wrestling and horse events timed to the flowering.
  • Manych-Gudilo - a saline lake with pelicans and islands of feral horses.

When to go

Mid to late April, and the window moves by a week or more with the spring. A day from Elista. Going in May means missing it entirely.

Honest expectations

The bloom is short and its timing is unpredictable - people arrive a week wrong every year. Picking the tulips is illegal, they are protected, and the festival crowds do real damage by walking through stands. Open steppe with no shade or facilities. A guide or local knowledge is needed to find good ground.

Nearby

Elista and the Golden Abode temple are the base; Manych-Gudilo is south.
