Praid sits on a salt dome that has been worked since Roman times, and the visitor level lies around a hundred and twenty metres below the surface, reached by a bus that drives down the access tunnel rather than by lift, which is itself part of the experience. What opens up at the bottom is enormous: chambers with ceilings tens of metres high, walls of grey and white banded salt, and within them a small underground town of playgrounds, table tennis, a café, a chapel, a cinema room and an adventure park. The main reason many Romanians come is medical: the constant temperature, humidity and salt aerosol are used for respiratory treatment, and people spend hours or days here under supervision. Above ground the village has a salt canyon and mineral springs, and the Székely Land around it is a landscape of wooded hills and pottery villages.
What you actually see
- The bus descent - driving down the access tunnel into the mine.
- The great chambers - banded salt walls under very high ceilings.
- The underground facilities - playgrounds, café, chapel and treatment areas.
- The salt canyon - the surface gorge cut into salt near the village.
When to go
Year-round; the underground climate is constant and the mine is a reliable bad-weather option. School holidays and summer weekends are extremely busy with families. Treatment sessions have their own schedule and can fill the halls.
Honest expectations
It is around sixteen degrees underground, which feels cold after a while, so bring layers. The atmosphere is firmly recreational rather than heritage, with noise from children and equipment, and anyone hoping for a quiet historical mine will not find it. Queues for the descent bus can be long in season.
Nearby
Corund pottery village is minutes away; Sovata and Lake Ursu lie north.
