Bride's Veil Waterfall

Vălul Miresei falls about thirty metres down a broad rock face, and because the water spreads across the whole width rather than dropping in a single jet, it takes the fanned shape that gives it the name. The rock beneath is heavily mossed and stepped, so the flow breaks into threads and the effect is soft rather than forceful. In spring, with snowmelt behind it, the fall covers the entire face; by late summer it can shrink to a few strands. Winter transforms it completely: the whole face freezes into a pale blue curtain of ice, and it has become a destination for ice climbers and for photographers who walk in through the snow. The setting is the wooded upper Someș valley in the Apuseni, with the village of Răchițele below and forest roads leading further into the mountains towards Ic Ponor.

• Winter ice - the fall frozen into a blue curtain, climbed by ice climbers.
• The viewing platform - a built deck at the base of the fall.
• Forest approach - a short walk in from the parking area.

When to go

April to June for maximum flow from snowmelt, which is when it is at its best. January and February for the ice. Late summer can leave it thin and unimpressive. Weekends bring crowds from Cluj, since it is an easy day trip.

Honest expectations

The walk in is short and the site is small, so this is a stop rather than an outing. The approach road from Răchițele is unsurfaced and rough in its last stretch. The viewing area gets busy and the platform is small. In a dry August the waterfall is genuinely underwhelming.

The Apuseni plateau roads climb south; Cluj-Napoca is about an hour and a half east.
