Bigăr Waterfall
A spring that spills over a great cushion of moss beside the road, famous online and much changed since its partial collapse in 2021.

Bigăr became one of the most photographed places in Romania because of an unusual shape: a karst spring emerging from the hillside and falling not in a plume but spread across a rounded dome of tufa thickly upholstered in moss, so that the water fanned out in threads over a green cushion into the Minis river below. It sits directly beside the road at the point where the 45th parallel crosses, which made it an effortless stop and helped it circulate endlessly on travel lists. In June 2021 a large section of the tufa dome collapsed, and the waterfall that exists today is a changed and reduced version of the one in the famous photographs. Tufa is a living deposit and will rebuild over time, but slowly. The setting remains attractive, in a wooded limestone valley in the Banat, and the site has been tidied with a viewing platform.
What you actually see
- The moss dome - what remains of the tufa cushion the spring falls over.
- The spring source - water emerging from the hillside beside the fall.
- The 45th parallel marker - the roadside sign at the halfway point between pole and equator.
- The viewing platform - a short built path from the parking area.
When to go
Spring and early summer for the strongest flow, and after rain rather than in a dry spell. Autumn colour in the valley is good. Any time of day works since the fall sits in a shaded gully, which also makes photography awkward in bright midday sun.
Honest expectations
Manage your expectations firmly: this is not the waterfall in the viral photographs, because the central formation collapsed in 2021, and many visitors leave disappointed for exactly that reason. It is also very small, five minutes from the car park, and it now carries an entry fee and a stall or two. Treat it as a roadside stop on the way to the Nera gorges rather than a destination.
Nearby
The Nera gorges and Beușnița are west; Băile Herculane lies east over the hills.
