Al Thagab Fort

Al Thagab stands in northern Qatar near a well and the remains of a date grove, a fort with towers at the corners and rooms along its inner walls, restored in the 1980s and generally dated to the eighteenth century. Like the other desert forts here it existed to control water rather than to defend a town, and the well beside it is the reason the site was worth holding at all.

• The eighteenth-century date - the period the fort is generally assigned to.

When to go

November to March is the comfortable season. Late afternoon light is best on the walls. Summer heat is severe with no shade.

Honest expectations

The fort is often locked and the visit is then from outside. There is no interpretation on site. The desert track in needs care in a low car.
