Toro Verde

In the mountains at the centre of the island, an adventure park has strung a series of ziplines across a forested valley, and one of them, called The Monster, runs for around two and a half kilometres in a single span, high enough and long enough to rank among the longest anywhere. Riders are clipped in face-down in a harness so that the flight is head-first at speeds well over a hundred kilometres an hour, with the valley dropping away beneath. A shorter but still substantial line called The Beast, a suspension bridge, a via ferrata and canopy circuits fill out the park. It sits in the Cordillera Central, a green interior of coffee farms and steep roads that most visitors to the island never see.

When to go

December to April is the drier season; the mountains are cooler and wetter than the coast year-round and rain closes the lines. Reservations are required and weekends book out. Weight and health restrictions apply and are enforced at check-in.

Honest expectations

Lines close in rain, thunderstorms and high wind, which happens often in the mountains, and refunds and rescheduling policies vary. Strict weight limits apply at both ends of the scale. The drive up is steep and winding and takes longer than the distance suggests. It is expensive by island standards, and the biggest line is priced separately.
