Isla de Cabras and El Cañuelo

Fortín San Juan de la Cruz, always called El Cañuelo, is the smallest and least visited piece of the San Juan fortifications listed by UNESCO, a square masonry fort standing on a rock at the western side of the bay mouth. Its job was simple: to catch any ship entering the channel in crossfire with El Morro directly opposite. The first version was timber and was burned by the Dutch in 1625; the stone one replaced it. Around it, Isla de Cabras is a former quarantine station and goat island now run as a park, with a road out along the spit, picnic areas under palms, and the single best view of El Morro and the old city across the water.

When to go

December to April is drier and clearer for the view across the bay. Late afternoon light on El Morro from here is the best of the day. Weekends bring local families and the picnic areas fill.

Honest expectations

El Cañuelo itself cannot be entered; you look at it from the shore. The island is a modest municipal park rather than a heritage site, with basic facilities and litter at busy times. The drive out through Cataño's industrial edge is unattractive. Winds on the point are strong.
