Bomba and Plena

Bomba came out of the enslaved African communities of the sugar coast, and it inverts the usual order: the dancer leads and the lead drummer follows, answering each movement on the barrel drum in a duel that the rest of the ensemble holds a steady frame around. It is danced in a circle, one person at a time, and the exchange is the whole point. Plena arrived later from the working districts of Ponce, played on hand-held frame drums called panderos, and its verses reported what had happened in the neighbourhood, which earned it the name the sung newspaper. Both are alive rather than preserved: Loíza, the town most associated with bomba, holds a festival each July with masked vejigantes in the streets.

When to go

Year-round, since community schools and cultural centres in Santurce and Loíza run regular open nights and classes. The Loíza festival at the end of July is the biggest single occasion. Christmas season brings plena into the streets everywhere as part of the parranda tradition.

Honest expectations

There is no permanent venue where you can simply buy a ticket, so seeing the real thing means finding a community event, a workshop or a festival date rather than turning up. Hotel shows are usually a thin performance of it. The bomba circle is participatory, and standing at the edge filming rather than joining in is noticed.
